Speak about America here if you want to.
I'm sure there are those who'll hate my "About The United States" thread. Well, we're even, because I hate that there are people who inexplicably go along with the ridiculous notion that there can be more than one version of what the facts are. I'm 52. I earned knowing a few things the hard legitimate way (college, life experience, years of observation); I didn't take the hideous shortcut of listening to propaganda until it set in. (I don't get the "news" from an American network. And I don't just repeat what I hear as if it's trustable.)
I locked that thread from comments because I wanted to document something, I didn't want it to turn into a mess of arguing. But this thread can be used for discussion if you'd like. I doubt I'll get involved in it though because I don't like to play "this versus that".
I know, you may think I'm pompous. Well I'm old. I know what's going on in this country. It repulses me, and I feel ashamed and angry and embarrassed by it. And it won't help to battle over contradictory spin, as if defending the imaginary against each other would be better to do than to just review the facts as they are and discuss what to do about them in a sane constructive manner.
I'm especially offended by the republicans for disseminating misinformation as propaganda. And I'm even more deeply disappointed that otherwise intelligent people will repeat it, mindlessly, like parrots. And I'm then saddened at a society which thinks having a spectator competition is a better idea than getting on with anything constructive or decent or whole. For us to be so robbed while so many of us willingly refuse to acknowledge that political contests are as constructive and as fake as professional wrestling, that all which you see on "the news" is just bullshit to keep your attention deflected, to "divide and conquer" you, to make you repeat and believe things that just aren't true...makes me downright depressed. -as does how impossible it seems to be to replace the misinformation with any truth.
People only dig in harder when their beliefs are contradicted. They've swallowed something, and they will only defend it. (This is what I mean by "I'm old". -> Been there, done that, arguing is fruitless frustration.) So I've just stated how things really are, and if it doesn't match what someone heard on FOX, well of course it doesn't.
The only thing I'd add, would be perhaps to simplify what I stated this way: What's going on with America isn't new. History is a long chain of empires. Fascism is often involved in imperialism. It's hard for Americans to think of their own country as bad - Americans who were brought up being told lies about how right matters and "we're the good guys" and all that. We're even now constantly assaulted by ideal notions (lies) about how things are or should be viewed. But shit is shit. And things simply are not ideal. The truth about human nature is ugly, not noble. Perhaps we should just face that.
I keep recommending "Animal Farm" as an example of what authority always starts out as promising, and what it then turns into in time. It was a cautionary tale when it was published, and it still serves as one now. I think you can figure out who the pigs are in America.
This thread is for discussion of The United States.

Re: Speak about America here if you want to.
America seems to raise very strong opinions - positive and negative. For many Muslim extremists it's see as the Great Satan; for many socialists it's seen as the home of global capitalism; for others it's seen as a barbaric country without a proper welfare or national health system; and so on.
I actually love America and it's a vast country (not so big as it thinks it is, though; the 'Ballad of Davy Crockett' has the lines 'his land is biggest and his land is best.' The first part of that sentence is just plain wrong because Russia and Canada are both bigger; the second part is of course just an opinion.
I find it sad that so many Americans never go outside their own country.
I also find it sad that so many non-Americans only go to the 'tourist' type destinations.
I've been to less touristy places like Montana, Wyoming, Utah and South Carolina as well as 'Florida, Texas, Nevada, California and New York.
There are huge differences between one town and another let alone one state..
America is capable of being the best country in the world but it's been badly let down by its rulers

Our rulers have robbed us, yes. They sold all our jobs. They decimated the economy. They exempted themselves from law and taxation. They used the legislative powers they bought to make laws that allow them to use us as "wage slaves".ladylinda wrote:America seems to raise very strong opinions - positive and negative. America is capable of being the best country in the world but it's been badly let down by its rulers
In the 70's, anything over 8% interest on a loan was considered usery ( a high crime). Now they routinely charge us 30%, because they just handily bought the government so they could change the rules to allow themselves to do that. They get richer and richer this way, as we get poorer and poorer. And they keep systematically legislating what recourse and protections we used to have away.
The minimum wage has been suppressed so that those who work at Wal-Mart (now our largest employer, other than the government itself) cannot afford to own a car, and are eligible for public food assistance even though they work full time. That's not right. It's not okay.
These rich bastards DO NOT need the extra money they get by underpaying the very people who make them rich. But they're up to something with this; it's not just greed that motivates them, it's taking control that they're after. For every time the economy tanks, by their hand, they get to take all the properties that went bankrupt (just as every time they drive an individual to bankruptcy, they get to take their home away, take possession of it).
This has created an awful lot of homelessness, and we are now in a time when the young generation is expected to be unable to buy houses for themselves, because the wages are too low and the rates too high.
Meanwhile, they have turned us into a monopoly economy (which works out to be a communist economy (planned, not market driven)). And in order to swallow up all the smaller businesses to get monopolistic control, they routinely make our products absolutely shoddy (in order to underprice, and so drive out of business, any competition). American products are now terrible quality. Things that used to last 25 years now last a year, and they're annoying even during the time they're working.
Food is being repackaged into smaller amount containers which cost the same price. This tactic forces us to have to buy two, to get what used to be one, a way of effectively doubling the price.
I don't need to mention how shitty our health care INSURANCE SCAM of a system is (60 million Americans without any health care at all, because the bastard corporations are gouging so egregiously that people just cannot afford to buy any coverage anymore.
Essentially, if you're rich here, you'll get richer. But if you're middle class, you will get poorer. And the results of poverty are not good. It raises crime rates, it lowers education. It raises infant mortalities and unaddressed health problems. It has dramatically increased homelessness.
When George Bush Sr was president, I heard him refer to the idea of doing anything domestically with disdain. He called it "that domestic thing". He wanted nothing to do with it. And indeed the republicans don't. They are only interested in working to get control, within and without, at any cost (misery, death, oppression on vast scales, who cares, they don't) They just want to get control, of the world. And this is their only goal. They work on nothing constructive for the country. They in fact despise doing things for people with their own money they pay in good faith to them.
If I had my way, no one would ever be put in a cage or punished again EXCEPT the bastards who have done all this, whom I would put to death publicly. The Bushes, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice, all the people who conspired to use our power to self govern to instead make war on the world and fleece us.
There's not much more i can say. That's how things are here now. We're all on camera, under guard (under threat of reprisal from the well armed soldier bullies, the "cops" as you call them. It keeps anyone from fighting any of this to take their own democracy back. We get brainwashed by the TV anyway, and sedated -so that we are just spectators, who groan futiley, then eat too much and watch racing and cop shows.
We are a society of ASSHOLES, if you ask me, because that simply isn't good enough. It's not ok. People DO see what is going on, and they passively sat and allowed it. I hold them responsible, as would the founding fathers of of this country, this idea of self-rule.
Brainwashing. Propaganda. If we do have revolution, thing one after we KILL the bastards who are currently in control, is to make lying to the public illegal. The punishment for damaging not just one person, but millions should be that they forfeit all their money and belongings and their home, and be forced to work at McDonalds on minimum wage for the rest of their lives.
For that is what they have done to us.
